Marco Aqil defends PhD thesis

17 February 2025

Spinoza PhD student Marco Aqil has successfully defended his PhD thesis titled “Levels of Vision: From Computational Models to Psychedelics” at the VU University. During his PhD, Marco (now also known as Dr Aqil!) studied the brains of people under the influence of psilocybin, the active compound in psychedelic “magic” mushrooms and truffles. He found that brains respond fundamentally differently to visual stimuli. Marco pioneered this new line of research, as no earlier neuroscientific research involving psychedelic substances had been conducted in Amsterdam.

The full thesis is available online on the website of the VU.
