My research focuses on the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying spirituality, self-transcendent experiences and feelings of awe and wonder. Starting from a predictive processing framework, it is investigated how during these experiences the perception of the body and the external world changes as a function of the integration of both interoceptive and exteroceptive signals. To this end I use both EEG, fMRI and tDCS studies, involving different groups of participants (e.g. religious believers; meditators; psychics) and using different experimental manipulations (e.g. virtual reality; placebo brain stimulation).
