Reinout Wiers founded the ADAPT (Adolescence, Development Addiction and Psychopathology) research group which focuses on the study of (neuro-) cognitive changes in addiction and other psychopathology. To address these issues part of the research aims at the development and implementation of new methods (cognitive bias modification –CBM; transcranial Direct Current Stimulation, tDCS) to restore maladaptive brain functioning in these disorders. Methods include (neuro-) cognitive tests, EEG, fMRI, and tDCS.
My main research topic concerns the (neuro-)cognitive processes involved in the etiology of addictive behaviors, and related psychopathology. In our lab we investigate what changes in people's mind/brain as they develop addictive behaviors. We also try to directly influence the processes involved in addiction, in order to study the causal status of these processes and ultimately to "re-train" these processes back to normal, which would imply increased control over addictive behaviors.
